The Cougars received their highest vote total this season with 201 votes this week. In the Soccer America poll, BYU moved up two positions to No. 7. Last week the Cougars were No. 9. The Soccer Buzz poll also had BYU jumping up one spot from No. 10 to No. 9 this week. San Diego State dropped out of the Soccer Buzz poll this week after a No. 24 ranking last week. Regional Rankings: BYU and San Diego State both appear in the Soccer Buzz West Regional Rankings this week. The Cougars, who were No. 4 last week, moved up to No. 3, while the Aztecs dropped from No. 6 to No. 7. BYU’s Win Streak Snapped: The Cougars were riding a five-match win streak heading into Monday’s match at Harvard. The Crimson shocked the tenth-ranked Cougars with 1-0 win. Harvard forward Beth Totman netted the game-winning goal at the 89:17 mark of the match. Rebels Drop First Home Match: UNLV’s six-match home win streak came to an end this past weekend with a 1-0 loss to No. 24 Kentucky. The Rebels are 9-2-1 all time at home since the inception of the program last year. Their only other defeat came on Oct. 2, 1998 at the feet of Sacramento State (2-1). Falcons Continue to Soar: The Air Force Academy has won five of its last seven matches after starting the season 0-4. This past weekend, the Falcons defeated Navy 2-0, but fell to Army 2-1 at the Service Academies Tournament in St. Louis. Overtime is a Good Time: Mountain West Conference teams have been involved in 13 overtime matches this season. Of those 13 matches, MWC teams have won 11. Utah and San Diego State lead the league in overtime matches with three. Utah has won all three of its contests, including two that went into double overtime. SDSU is 2-1 in overtime matches. Home Sweet Home: Mountain West Conference teams have compiled a 25-9-1 home record thus far in the 1999 season. BYU is the only team undefeated at home (5-0), UNLV has lost just once (4-1). The last time BYU lost at home was on Nov. 7, 1998 to San Diego State (2-1 in ot) in the championship match of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. Two Lobos set sights on Record Book: Junior defender Jayme Dieringer and sophomore defender Jamie Minkler are both closing in on the New Mexico single-season total minutes mark. Dieringer is currently fourth on the list with 1,778 minutes played in 1997. This season she has played a total of 1,165 minutes. Minkler is fifth on the chart with 1,774 minutes played in 1998 and currently has 1,163 minutes thus season. The all-time single-season record is held by Melissa Liston. She recorded 1,873 minutes in 1995. Dieringer also has six assists on the season. She is five assists away from breaking Laurie Hegedorn’s single-season record of 10 set in 1997. LaCoursiere Sets Record, On Verge of Another: San Diego State senior forward Lori LaCoursiere became the Aztecs’ all-time assists leader last weekend after dishing out two assists vs. Montana. Her 36 career assists breaks the SDSU record of 35 set by All-American Catherine McGuire (1995-98). LaCoursiere also owns the career records for goals (46) and total points (128) at SDSU. LaCoursiere isn’t finished with the Aztec record book yet, as she needs just six more assists this season to break the SDSU single-season assist mark of 11. A record that McGuire currently owns. Sophomore midfielder Fay deLeon may beat LaCoursiere to the punch in the single-season assists category as she leads the Aztecs in 1999 with seven assists. Lobos Take Both Offense and Defense of the Week: New Mexico had two solid performances this past weekend from both its offense and defense as it shutout both Mississippi (2-0) and Georgia State (3-0) at its own Lobo Soccer Classic. The Lobo offense was led by senior midfielder Lana Melendres, who scored a goal in each match. The defense was headed by sophomore goalie Shelly Hammock and senior goalkeeper Dawn Trevino. Hammock recorded six saves in the Mississippi match, while Trevino stopped three shots on goal by Georgia State. Conference Scoring: Mountain West Conference teams extended their scoring advantage over their opponents from 25 to 27 goals this week. League teams have 148 goals to the opponents’ 121. BYU leads the way in scoring for the fourth week in a row with a 3.15 goals per match average. San Diego State remains second with a 2.27 average followed by Utah (1.91), New Mexico (1.60), UNLV (1.56), Air Force (1.18) and Wyoming (1.00). MWC vs. Nonconference Opponents: Mountain West Conference teams have a combined 42-34-3 (.564) record against nonconference opponents in 1999. The .564 win percentage is the highest of the year against nonconference opponents. San Diego State Registers First MWC Win: On the first official day of competition as a member of the Mountain West Conference, the San Diego State women’s soccer team captured the first victory by any team in any sport for the conference. The Aztces played UCSB in the first-ever sporting event in the Mountain West Conference on August 27, 1999 and won in style with a 5-1 win over the Gauchos.
