MWC Players of the Week Announced Castellanos, Wolf and Holman garner weekly honors.
Oct. 6, 2003 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State senior forward Kim Castellanos has been named Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week, while Air Force senior goalkeeper J.J. Wolf and BYU senior defender Britney Holman have been named Co-Defensive Players of the Week. This is the second career weekly honor for Castellanos and Wolf and the first for Holman. Castellanos, an Escondido, Calif., native, scored two clutch goals for the Aztecs last weekend, helping them to a win and a tie. Against Arizona State, she drove in a goal off of a corner kick in the 86th minute to knot the score at one apiece and send the match into overtime. In SDSU's overtime match against San Francisco, Castellanos knocked in the game-winning goal (assisted by Becky Prilaman) two minutes into the extra period, giving the Aztecs the 1-0 win. Wolf led Air Force to a 1-0 shutout victory over DePaul at Cadet Soccer Stadium last weekend, tying a Falcon school record with 16 saves in the process. The Lakewood, Wash., product, had nine saves in the opening half and secured the win with diving saves in the closing minutes.
Holman helped the Cougars to two victories on the week, including an upset win over USC (ranked 14th in the nation by Soccer America Magazine), with her play on the defensive end of the field. She controlled her side of the field all week by not allowing a goal and stopping all advances by her opponent. In BYU's 2-1 win over the Trojans, Holman held last week's Pac-10 Player of the Week, Hillary Schwarzbach, to no shots and no assists while either forcing her to pass the ball or stealing the ball from her on every possession.
