Utah's Card and Wayman Earn Women's Soccer Player of the Week Honors Utah duo honored after upset win over No. 7 UCLA
Oct. 4, 2004 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Freshman forward Chelsea Card and sophomore defender Melissa Wayman, both of the University of Utah, have been named Mountain West Conference Players of the Week for women's soccer. It is the second consecutive and second career honor for Card, who earns offensive player recognition, while Wayman receives defensive player accolades for the first time in her career. Card, from San Clemente, Calif., posted the game-winning goal in the Utes' 2-1 upset victory over No. 7-ranked UCLA, Oct. 1. Despite coming off the bench, Card has netted four goals in the past four games, including three goals for game winners. She leads Utah with four goals on the season. Wayman, a native of West Valley City, Utah, helped hold the UCLA offense to just one goal in the Utes' upset win. The Bruins average 2.25 goals per game. She stopped several potential UCLA scoring chances by clearing three of five Bruin corner kicks and several free kicks that were sent into the penalty box. Wayman also scored Utah's first goal to give Utah an early advantage. Utah is now 7-3-1 on the year. The upset of UCLA was the first victory over a ranked opponent this season by a Mountain West Conference team.
