Sept. 29, 2003

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State sophomore forward Lisette Martinez and Utah freshman goalkeeper Ashley Mason have been named Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. This is the second consecutive weekly award for Martinez and the first career award for Mason.

Martinez helped the Aztecs to a 3-1 win over Nevada last weekend, scoring a goal and adding an assist. Her corner kick in the 29th minute of the match found Kim Castellanos who knocked in the goal giving SDSU a 2-0 lead going into halftime. Martinez gave the Aztecs a 3-0 advantage in the 50th minute of the match, tapping in a pass from Becky Prilaman to score her first goal of the season and give San Diego State its third consecutive victory. On the season Martinez has a goal and a team-high four assist in eight matches.

Mason, a Sunnyvale, Calif., native, helped the Utes to a 1-0 upset victory over No. 5 Florida last weekend, tallying the first complete game shutout of her career. She played all 90 minutes in goal, saving seven shots and holding the Gators to no goals for the first time this season. Mason also had several clearances and routinely punted the ball over the midfield line, which changed the field and kept pressure on the Gator defense throughout the match. Florida, which averages 14.75 shots a game, was held to nine total shots on the match and only got four shots on goal from its top three scorers.
