Rockwood REACHES Century Mark
BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood became the first women¹s soccer coach in
the Mtn. West to reach the 100-win mark for her career. Rockwood captured
victory 100 as the Cougars defeated Milwaukee-Wisconsin, 2-0, on Sept. 23.
She is currently 100-25-1 in just over five seasons in Provo. Entering this
season, Rockwood was ranked fifth among active coaches by winning
percentage. She has averaged 18.6 wins per season over the past five years,
which ranks second behind only Anson Dorrance of North Carolina for wins per
season. Dorrance has won an average of 22.2 matches per season.
Chuck Clegg is nine wins away from his 100th career victory at San Diego
State with a 91-47-5 record. The Aztecs have at least 10 matches remaining
this season.
Cowgirl UP
Wyoming is 5-3-1 overall thus far in the 2000 season and is one win away
from becoming the winningest Cowgirl soccer team in history. Wyoming has
also scored 18 goals this season, topping its total of 17 last year. The
Cowgirls lead their opponents in goals, assists, points, shots, shot
percentage and shots on goal.
Home-Sweet-Home
BYU has been unbeatable at South Field in the past year and a half, but will
be tested this week as it hosts 10th-ranked Southern California on Thursday,
Sept. 28, and No. 13 Arizona State on Saturda, Sept. 30. The Cougars have
won 17 in a row at home dating back to a 6-1 victory over Stanford in the
first round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 11, 1998. Last season, the
Cougars went 12-0 at home and are currently 4-0 this season. The last time
BYU lost at home was on Nov. 7, 1998 to San Diego State (2-1 in ot) in the
championship match of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. The last
regular season defeat on South Field was also to the Aztecs (1-0 on Oct. 24,
1998).
Fast start at home
UNLV has opened the the 2000 season with a 3-0 home record with wins over
Idaho, Bowling Green and San Francisco. The Rebels have won at least four
matches in a row at home to begin each of the past three seasons. UNLV went
5-0 at Peter Johann Memorial Field at the start of the 1999 season, but then
lost five in a row to close out the year.
Streak Ends
San Diego State halted its six match losing streak with a 1-0 win over Long
Beach State on Sept. 24. The six match slide was the longest losing streak
in the programs history. The Aztecs opened the season with two home matches,
but then went on a seven-match road trip in which they went 1-6. SDSU
returned for LBSU and will play its next four matches on the SDSU Sports
Deck before making another road trip.
Enjoying Extra Time
New Mexico played its fourth straight overtime match, and fifth overall this
season, last Friday at Alabama. The Lobos won the match, 1-0, and improved
its extra time record in 2000 to 4-1, compared to their 1-2-1 record last
year. In just the second season of the Mountain West Conference, New Mexico
has played nine overtime matches, five more than any other league team.
Streaks
Air Force had its Mtn. West high 13-game scoring streak snapped with a 3-0
loss to Dayton last week. The last time the Falcons were shutout prior to
the Dayton match, was on Oct. 23, 1999 at BYU (3-0). Utah now holds the
current scoring streak in the confernece at 12. The last time the Utes were
shutout was on Oct. 30, 1999 vs. Long Beach State (1-0).
Hat Tricks
The Mountain West Conference had three individuals record hat tricks in its
inaugural season in Oe99. In 2000, the MWC has seen two athletes accomplish
the feat. Wyoming senior forward Kelly McShane recorded not only her first
career hat trick, but the first ever in Wyoming women¹s soccer history in
the 5-1 win over Eastern Washington. BYU¹s Michelle Jensen-Peterson tallied
the second hat trick of the season in the conference and the first of her
career in the 6-1 victory vs. Creighton.
MWC Quick Shots
Air Force is in the midst of a seven match losing streak, one shy of its
all-time record (eight). Of the Falcons eight losses this season, seven have
been by one goal or less...BYU is 17-3 after a loss. The Cougars have lost two
or more matches in a row only twice in five years...New Mexico has won three
of its five contests this season by shutout. It has also been shutout three
of its five defeats...San Diego State has yet to score three goals in a game
this season. In each of the previous 11 seasons, the Aztecs have tallied
three goals or more in a match at least three times a year...UNLV has never
won more than three road/neutral matches in a season since the inception of
the program in 1998. The Rebels will try for their school record fourth road
win this week with games at Long Beach State and Washington State...Utah has
won five straight matches and is two victories shy of the MWC record for
consecutive wins (seven set by BYU last season)...Wyoming had recorded just
one non-conference road victory in the programs history prior to this
season. Through the first nine matches of the 2000 season, the Cowgirls have
already notched two wins and still have one more non-conference road game to
play.
