MWC Soccer Players of the Week Utah's Card and Wyoming's Sheppard earn honors
Sept. 27, 2004 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of Utah freshman Chelsea Card and University of Wyoming freshman Ashley Sheppard have been named Mountain West Conference Players of the Week for women's soccer. Card, a forward, earns offensive player recognition, while Sheppard, a goalkeeper, receives defensive player accolades. It is the first career weekly honor for each player. Card, from San Clemente, Calif., led the Utes to a 2-0-0 record this past week, as she netted two goals for four points. In Utah's 4-1 win over Washington State, Sept. 23, Card came off the bench to score two goals. Both goals came against Cougar goalkeeper Katie Hultin, who had not allowed a goal in over 420 minutes this season. In a 1-0 victory over Utah State, Sept. 26, Card contributed to the game-winning goal in overtime as she stole the ball from an Aggie defender and passed it to a teammate who assisted on the winning score. Utah is 6-2-1 on the season. Sheppard, a native of Highlands Ranch, Colo., recorded two shutouts in goal last week as Wyoming defeated Northern Colorado, 1-0 in 2 OT, Sept. 22, and Cal State Fullerton, 1-0, Sept. 26, to move to 5-2-3 on the season. She now has three career shutouts. Sheppard had a combined 14 saves in the Cowgirls' two victories, including eight saves against Cal State Fullerton.
