Sept. 26, 2011

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

New Mexico senior midfielder Jael Fanning has been named Mountain West Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while New Mexico senior defender Roxie McFarland has garnered MW Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

Fanning, a native of Albuquerque, N.M., collected three assists and a goal over the weekend to help the Lobos secure victories over Oklahoma (2-1) and New Mexico State (4-0). Against the Sooners on Friday night, Fanning assisted on the game-winning goal, feeding a long pass to forward Jennifer Williams in the final minutes of action. Fanning was credited with the game-winning goal on Sunday against the Aggies, finding the back of the net off a cross from teammate Roxie McFarland on the left edge of the box in the 25th minute.

Hailing from Ogden, Utah, McFarland paced a New Mexico defensive unit that prevented New Mexico State from taking a single shot on goal last Saturday. In total, the Lobo defensive front limited the Aggies to five shots in 90 minutes of action. On Friday, McFarland and the Lobo defense allowed Oklahoma to only take 11 shots. The Sooners’ lone goal came after a deflected ball managed to sneak past the goalkeeper.
