Cougars Lose To Portland, 2-1 BYU falls to 3-2-1.
Sept. 22, 2001
SEATTLE - Playing back to back games is usually the norm for BYU's women's soccer team, but not when the first game ends up including two 15-minute sudden death overtime periods. That was the scenario Friday night as the Cougars ended up playing 120 minutes of soccer in a 1-1 tie against 11th ranked Washington. On Saturday evening, the 17th ranked Cougars faced fourth ranked Portland in 90 minutes of action in which BYU battled the entire game, holding off a berrage of corner kicks and 17 shots by the Pilots. And in the end it was Portland 2, BYU1. Freshman Kimmie Davis scored the lone goal for the Cougars with just three minutes left in the first half of play after getting a pass from teammate Lydia Ojuka. Ojuka drew out the Pilots goalkeeper, then passed the ball to Davis for the eight yard boot into the far right post. Portland's Erin Misaki and Christine Sinclair scored a goal a piece in each half to give the Pilots the win. "You can't ask more from this team then their strong hard effort tonight," said BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood."The team played tough, battling to the very end and I thought our bench players gave us a great effort as well." "Portland is an outstanding team and they have some great players like Christina Sinclair that are just hard to stop. Hopefully, we'll get a chance to play them again,"added Rockwood.
The 17th ranked Cougars, now 3-2-1 on the year return to Utah to play
at Weber State on Tuesday, Sept. 25 then host Arizona
and Boston University on Friday and Saturday night.
