National Rankings: BYU moved up one spot to No. 10 in the latest NSCAA Coaches¹ poll after going 1-1 last week. The Cougars are 7-1 on the season and received 191 votes this week. In the Soccer America poll, BYU jumped up three postions to No. 11. Last week the Cougars were No. 14. San Diego State dropped out of the Soccer America poll after falling to newly ranked William & Mary (No. 20) 4-1 this past weekend. The Aztecs also fell out of the Soccer Buzz poll this week. National Rankings Regional Rankings: BYU and San Diego State both appear in the Soccer Buzz West Regional Rankings this week. The Cougars, who were No. 2 last week, fell to No. 4, while the Aztecs dropped from No. 6 to No. 7. Deja Vu: BYU entered last week as the only undefeated team remaining in the Mountain West Conference. The Cougars were 6-0 and ranked No. 11 in the country heading into their showdown with No. 10 USC. For the second straight year, the Lady Trojans defeated the Cougars (2-1) and ended their six match win streak. Last year at this time, BYU was also 6-0 heading into the match with USC and fell 1-0. Turning Things Around: After starting the season with four straight losses, three of which were one-goal defeats, the Air Force Academy Falcons are on a two-match win streak. This past weekend at the Creighton Bluejay Classic in Omaha, Nebraska, the Falcons not only went 2-0 and claimed second place in the tournament, but recorded their first two shutouts of the season. Air Force defeated Eastern Illinois in the first match 1-0 behind freshman midfielder Wendy Emminger's game-winning goal at the 88:58 mark of the match. On Sunday, the Falcons defeated host Creighton 1-0 in overtime after junior forward Stephanie Rader netting the lone goal of the match in the 98th minute. The Falcons will try to continue their winning ways this week as they face the University of Colorado in Boulder in Wednesday, before hosting Idaho State on Friday and Oral Roberts on Sunday. Three Falcons made the Creighton Bluejay Classic all-tournament team this past weekend. Junior midfielder Jennie Schoeck, forward Stephanie Rader and sophomore midfielder Beth Boyer were honored. Fitzpatrick For Two: New Mexico senior forward Jennifer Fitzpatrick scored twice in the 4-1 win over Denver this past weekend at the Lobo Invitational. Her two goals came less than three minutes apart, as she scored at the 85:23 mark and 88:06 mark of the match. The two goals were not only the first of the season for Fitzpatrick, but her first goals since the 1997 season. National Statistics: BYU is ranked fourth in the nation in scoring offense with a 4.14 goals per game average. The 29 goals in seven matches (CS Fullerton match not included) is the fifth highest goal total in the country through Sept. 19. Two Mountain West Conference individuals are among the nation's elite this week. Utah sophomore Amy Kofoed is tied for fifth in goals per game with a 1.17 average (seven goals in six matches), while Wyoming junior goalkeeper Amanda Vandervort is tied for seventh in saves with a 10 saves per game average (70 total saves in seven matches). Crowded House: New Mexico drew the largest crown of the year by a Mountain West Conference team with 2,168 fans coming out for the Lobo Invitational match between UNM and Fairfield. The Lobos fell in double overtime, 2-1. The previous attendance high this season was 1,616 by BYU in a home match vs. Cal Poly SLO on September 11. Floyd Cancels Match: Due to Hurricane Floyd, San Diego State played only one match at the William & Mary Tournament this past weekend. The match against host William & Mary was moved from Friday to Sunday, while the match with Old Dominion scheduled for Sunday was cancelled. Defense of the Week: The Air Force defense allowed just one shot on goal in two matches at the Creighton Bluejay Classic. The Falcons recorded their first two shutouts of the year in the 1-0 win against Eastern Illinois and the 1-0 overtime victory over host Creighton. In the Air Force's 15 wins over the past two and a half seasons, the Falcons have recorded eight shutouts. Offense of the Week: After the University of Denver scored the opening goal of the match and held a 1-0 lead midway through the second half, the Lobo offense kicked it into gear to pull out the 4-1 victory. UNM scored four goals in 18 minutes, three of which came in a three minute time span. The offensive surge was led by Jennifer Fitzpatrick, who netted two goals. Freshman forward Michelle Nowfel and sophomore defender Danielle Pecastaing also had goals in the match. The four goals by New Mexico is its highest goal performance since the Lobos defeated Wyoming 5-0 on October 12, 1997 in Laramie. The administrative and coaching staffs of three MWC institutions decided to make some changes in their logo, and one team undertook a major change and introduced its first major uniform change in 30 years. On August 16, BYU unveiled its new logo, colors and uniform. The change has received regional and national attention. Air Force and New Mexico changed their respective logos as well. Air Force introduced their logo last spring and New Mexico revealed its new logo to the media August 30th. The New Mexico women's soccer team was one of the first Mountain West Conference sports teams to compete and sported the new logo at its Aug. 27th game at Colorado College.
