Sept. 14, 1999

Player of The Week: San Diego State University sophomore midfielder Kate Qually not only notched the first goals of her collegiate career this past weekend, but her first hat trick as she helped lead the Aztecs to two straight victories over Oklahoma (2-0) and Cincinnati (5-0).

Qually, of Delta, British Columbia, Canada (South Delta Senior Secondary), scored three goals in the Aztecs 5-0 victory over Cincinnati on Sunday. The hat trick was the first at SDSU since Lori LaCoursiere recorded three goals against Fresno State on Sept. 2, 1996, and only the fourth time in the program’s 10-plus year history.

Qually’s first goal came at 19:14 of the first half and put the Aztecs up 2-0. She scored again less than four minutes later at the 23 minute mark to give SDSU a 3-0 lead heading into the half. Qually’s final goal of the match came in the 64th minute and extended the Aztec lead to 4-0. She also recorded two assists on the weekend, one in the win over Oklahoma and one vs. Cincinnati, for a total of five points.

This is the first player of the week honor for Qually.

National Rankings: BYU remained No. 11 in the NSCAA National Rankings after moving to 4-0 this past week (Cal Poly and Arizona not included). The Cougars received 175 votes this week, 35 more votes than last week’s rankings. In the Soccer America poll, BYU moved up one spot to No. 14 and jumped up two positions in the Soccer Buzz poll to ninth.

San Diego State also remained put in its No. 17 position this week in the Soccer America poll after improving to 5-1 on the season. The Aztecs returned to the Soccer Buzz poll after a one-week hiatus, entering at No. 25.
