Sept. 5, 2011

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

TCU senior midfielder Kaylie Garcia has been named Mountain West Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while New Mexico junior goalkeeper Kelli Cornell has garnered MW Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

Garcia, a native of Oklahoma City, Okla., helped propel TCU to a 3-1 road victory at Texas State on Friday night. In her second game back from the World University Games, Garcia tallied one goal and one assist, while also pacing the Horned Frogs with three shots on goal. With the match tied, 1-1, Garcia fired a shot through the left corner of the net in the 52nd minute to give TCU a 2-1 advantage. Her lead pass to teammate Kristen Halverson in the 69th minute secured the match in TCU’s favor and gave the senior midfielder three total points for the contest.

Hailing from San Clemente, Calif., Cornell posted back-to-back road shutouts over Cal State Northridge (W, 1-0) and UC Santa Barbara (W, 1-0) on Friday night and Sunday afternoon, respectively. Cornell protected the net for 180 minutes of action, making a combined four saves against the Matadors and Gauchos, and once again preventing a Lobo opponent from finding the back of the net. Cornell is now tied for first on the New Mexico all-time career wins list for a goalkeeper with 28.
