MWC NOTES
Last Week's Recap
Mountain West softball teams are 70-32-1 through its fourth week of play. Last week, San Diego State went 5-1 at home, falling only to No. 4/7 UCLA. New Mexico also fared well, sweeping a three-game series with Oklahoma State. Utah posted a 3-2 record at the Texas Classic, including a win over No. 22/25 host Texas. UNLV also recorded a 3-2 mark at its home tournament, defeating teams from the Pac-10 (Cal) and Big East (Pittsburgh). BYU made an appearance in the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., where the Cougars defeated Drake and split the series with Creighton, before falling to No. 3/2 Arizona State. Colorado State had the week off.
In The Rankings
San Diego State continued its climb in the USA Today/NFCA poll at No. 21 and the ESPN.com/USA Collegiate Softball poll at No. 17 this week after going 5-1 at the San Diego Classic. UNLV and Colorado State are are also receiving votes in both polls.
BYU
The Cougars went 2-2 in the Wilson/Demarini Invitational in Tempe Ariz., falling to No. 3/2 Arizona State and Creighton, after defeating Drake and Creighton in the first meeting...Despite scoring only six runs in four games, BYU belted three home runs, marking the team's 21st this season...The Cougars suffered their worst loss of the season against Creighton, 10-1, who they had defeated, 1-0, the previous day....BYU faced its third top-10 opponent against No. 3/2 Arizona State, allowing eight runs.
Colorado State
Colorado State is off to its best start in school history with an 11-2 record, surpassing the mark set by the 1989 squad that started 10-2...Through the first 13 games, the Rams have recorded a .311 batting average with 23 doubles, two triples, and 15 home runs...The Colorado State pitching staff has a combined 2.54 ERA in 91 innings pitched with 68 strikeouts and only 25 walks...Freshman Caitlan Stem is beginning her college softball career on a high note as she has started every game this season at short stop for the Rams and has a .391 batting average through 13 games...Stem batted an even .400 at the USD Tournament with two doubles, a triple and four RBI...In the field, Stem has a .941 overall fielding percentage with 18 putouts and 46 assists.
New Mexico
New Mexico softball swept Oklahoma State in a three-game series last weekend and currently has a five game winning streak...The Lobos have won all five games against Big 12 opponents dating back to the Lobo Invitational...UNM downed Missouri and Texas Tech in the final two games of that tournament...New Mexico is 9-5 on the season and is led offensively by sophomore Sara Loeffelholz...Loeffelholz is hitting .429 with three doubles, a triple and a home run...UNM hosts Georgetown and Wright State this Friday and Saturday.
San Diego State
San Diego State is 16-5 and off to its best start in school history...Fifteen of SDSU's 21 games have been against 2007 NCAA tournament teams, where the Aztecs are 10-5, including a 2-1 mark against 2007 WCWS schools...RF Brittany Knudsen is batting .481 (13-for-27) with eight runs and a .600 on-base percentage over her last 10 games...Senior LF/CF Tamani Wells has started a team-best 101 consecutive games for the Aztecs, dating back to the 2006 season...SDSU is 65-36 (.644) over those games...San Diego State is 14-2 when scoring at least three runs...The team is a perfect 12-0 when leading after five innings.
UNLV
UNLV went 3-2 in its own Eller Media Stadium Classic...The Rebels notched wins over Western Kentucky, Pittsburgh and Cal, while dropping contests against nationall-ranked Hawai'i and Long Beach State...UNLV's 3-2 win over Cal on Saturday was the Rebels first since 1999...The Golden Bears had won nine straight meetings prior to the Rebels' win...Jaci Hull led the Rebels in offense this past weekend with her .500 batting average, six hits, five RBI, six runs, 12 total bases, 1.000 slugging, three walks and .600 on-base.
Utah
Angie Boardman had the game-winning hit against Wichita State, doubling home two runners on base in the sixth inning...She is hitting .500 (9-of-18) with runners on base this season and has driven home what would become the winning run in four games this season...Diana Phillips hit .500 over the course of the tournament...Her triple against Texas was her 12th career triple, which ranks her third on the all-time list at Utah...Brittany Parker's 13-strikeout performance against Texas was a season-high.
