PROVO, Utah - BYU senior forward Jeni Viernes scored four goals to lift the Cougars to their fourth-straight MWC tournament title with a 5-1 win over the University of New Mexico Saturday afternoon in Provo.

With the game a scoreless tie in the 16th minute, Lobo keeper Kristen Winters came out of the box to gather the ball and then decided to allow the ball to enter the box. Viernes then poked the ball away from Winters and pushed it into the open net to give BYU a 1-0 lead.

UNM answered nine minutes later, however, when sophomore midfielder LeAnne Hendren's shot found the back of the net, making the score 1-1 at the 25:06 mark.

Viernes came back with two more goals of her own in a 10-minute stretch, heading in a shot in the 33rd minute and then finding the left side of the net as she drew the keeper out on the right and slid the ball across the goal at 43:42. Cougar junior Aleisha Cramer-Rose assisted on both of the goals, putting BYU up 3-1 to end the first half.

The Cougars extended their lead in the 79th minute when Viernes scored her fourth goal of the game on another header, with Jaime Rendich and Lydia Ojuka assisting on the play that made the score 4-1.

Ojuka then finished the scoring when she tapped the ball into a clear net in the 87th minute, after Krissa Campbell pushed the ball past Winters, making the final score 5-1. Campbell and Davia King were credited with assists on the goal.

As the winner of the MWC tournament, BYU receives an automatic bid to represent the Mountain West Conference in the NCAA Women's College Cup Championships, which begin next week. The 64-team Division I soccer Championship bracket will be announced on ESPNEWS on Monday, Nov. 11 at approximately 4:30 p.m. EST.
