Castellano Propels SDSU Into Semifinal Game at MWC Soccer Championship

Aztecs improve to 13-6 on the season.

Nov. 6, 2002

PROVO, Utah - Kim Castellanos's penalty kick with just over two minutes remaining in the game gave SDSU the 2-1 victory over UNLV to advance to the semifinals of the 2002 MWC Women's Soccer Championship, Wednesday.

SDSU improved to 13-6 on the season and will play host BYU Thursday at 7 p.m., on South Field. UNLV, who was the fourth-seeded team in the tournament, finishes the season with a 10-8-1 overall record.

Both teams were evenly matched through the first 45 minutes of action as they played to a scoreless first half. In the second half it was the Aztecs who got on the scoreboard first with Shawni Flint's header over the hands of UNLV goalkeeper Jenna Huff. Just two minutes later at the 61:44 mark, the Rebels tied up the score at 1-1 when Annii Magliulo took advantage of a goalie rebound and kicked the ball into the back of the net.

The game looked like it would go into overtime as the clock was winding down when UNLV committed a foul inside the penalty box area with 2:25 left in the game. SDSU went to All-Conference First Team honoree Kim Castellanos to put in the penalty kick to give the Aztecs the go ahead 2-1 win.

San Diego State finished the game with 16 shots just one more than UNLV's 15. Each team had four corner kick opportunities.

The two semifinal games set for Thursday will pit Utah and New Mexico in a 4:30 p.m. kick off followed by BYU and San Diego State in the late game at 7 p.m. All games are being played on South Field, just south of the Smith Fieldhouse on the BYU campus.
