#4 New Mexico Defeats #5 Wyoming, 1-0, in First Round of MWC Tournament The Lobos advance to the semifinals vs. #1 BYU Thursday
Nov. 4, 2009 PROVO, Utah -
After a second-half offensive rally, New Mexico (13-4-3) defeated Wyoming (9-8-3), 1-0, to advance to the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament. The Lobos will face #1 seed BYU in the semifinals on Thursday. The game will be televised live on The Mtn. "We as a team are really excited to be here, and especially excited about our win tonight," said New Mexico head coach Kit Vela. "Although we struggled in the first half for possession, we came out in the second with a more positive attitude and just wanted to play our game. Now we just need to rest up and prepare ourselves for BYU tomorrow." The first half saw a back-and-forth battle between both teams. The Lobos tallied five shots on goal, compared to Wyoming's four. With a little over five minutes left in the half, the Cowgirls threatened with a corner kick but the Lobos made the save to enter the second half tied at 0-0. At the start of the second half, New Mexico's offense came out aggressively. The Lobos scored six minutes into the period, thanks to a header from Zaneta Wyne, off a pass from Rachel Fields. Wyne's score marked her career-best fifth goal of the season. New Mexico would threaten three more times with corners, but the Cowgirls' defense held strong. The Cowgirls had a chance to tie the score with a corner kick that landed in front of the goal with under a minute remaining in the game, but the Lobos cleared the ball to secure the 1-0 win. New Mexico outshot Wyoming, 14-7, and held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-3.
