PROVO, Utah--- A goal in each half by No. 3 seed San Diego State clinched a 2-0 victory for the Aztecs over the New Mexico Lobos in the second quarterfinal game of the 2004 Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Championships, Wednesday at BYU's South Stadium.
Freshman forward Lisa Nielsen, from Santa Maria, Calif., headed the ball in past Lobos' goalkeeper Kristen Winters for the first point of the game in the 30th minute of the opening half. In the second half, SDSU's Tiphanie Elliott, a product of Porterville, Calif., sealed the 2-0 victory when she received the ball from teammate Gina Salinas and kicked it just past the outstretched hands of Winters. It was each player's first goal of the season.
"I was extremely impressed with the energy the freshmen brought tonight," said SDSU head coach Mike Giuliano. "What more can you ask from these freshmen in scoring their first career goals."
In the contest SDSU had the advantage in shots with six to New Mexico's three. Both teams picked up two corner kicks with San Diego's coming all in the second half.
The very young New Mexico team stayed focused throughout the game, coming out even stronger in the second half, according to head coach Kit Vela. "We had five freshmen and six sophomores in the game today," said Vela. "Our team played hard in the second half and we were in it for the long haul. We have a great future ahead of us and we will grow from this experience and get better."
New Mexico falls to 5-12-0 on the year. The Aztecs improved to 7-7-5 and will meet the winner of the final quarterfinal game between BYU and the Air Force Academy.
