PROVO, Utah--- Utah junior forward Carisse Winegar came off the bench and scored her second goal of the year late in the first half to give the Utes a 1-0 victory over Wyoming in the first quarterfinal game of the 2004 Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Championships, Wednesday at BYU's South Stadium.

Utah improves to 12-5-2 and will play UNLV on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 4:30 p.m.. The No. 1 seed Rebels had a first round bye because they were the regular season champions.

Winegar's winning goal came in the 35th minute of the first half off a corner kick from Whitney Dorsey who dribbled it around a couple of Wyoming defenders and slipped it past the Cowgirls' goalkeeper Ashley Sheppard.

"It feels good to win any game any time," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "I was very happy with our ball possession, especially the first 60 minutes. I thought we got tired in the second half when we were turning the ball over a little more."

Utah keeper Ashley Mason.

Both teams had numerous opportunities in the second half of soccer action. Wyoming attacked more and played more organized in the second half according to the Cowgirls' head coach Anne Moore.

"I thought in the first half we did a bit of chasing and we were disorganized," said Moore. "We did a much better job of taking care of the ball in the second half. We had some great opportunities but just couldn't finish."

The Cowgirls finish the 2004 season with a 9-7-4 overall record.
