#6 San Diego State Upsets Top-25 and #3 seed BYU, 2-0 Aztecs improve to 11-8-2 and advance to semifinals
Nov. 2, 2005 LAS VEGAS - San Diego State's Erika Sutton tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Aztecs to a 2-0 upset win over No. 14 BYU (15-2-3) Wednesday evening in game three of the Mountain West Conference's Soccer Championship in Las Vegas, Nev. The Aztecs received their first win over a ranked team with goals from Sutton and Lisa Nielsen. SDSU advances to the semifinals to play the winner of the UNLV vs. TCU game on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. "BYU was the hardest working team we faced all year," noted SDSU head coach Mike Guiliano. "They teach all of us in the NCAA how to work hard. We made a decision to play pretty direct, and it worked out for us. I could not be happier." San Diego State's Sutton found an open ball in BYU territory in the 16th minute of the game. She beat a defender and slipped the ball past BYU goalkeeper Erika Woodbury to score her fifth goal of the season and give the Aztec's an early 1-0 lead. In the 66th minute, Lisa Nielsen notched her first goal of the season just moments after entering the match. Nielsen collected a cross from Sutton and buried the ball in the back of the net to give the Atzecs a 2-0 lead. Aztec goalkeeper Cat Burson made four saves on the night to notch her fourth shutout of the year. "I was disappointed and I think our team didn't come ready to play tonight," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We got outplayed, and in the second half when we played better, it was too late. We have a lot of work ahead of us. It's extremely disappointed that this has happened to us two years in a row." With the win, SDSU advances to play the winner of the UNLV vs. TCU game at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3.
