New Mexico Drops 5-2 Decision To Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The University of New Mexico women¹s soccer team was defeated 5-2 yesterday by Oregon State. The Beavers managed only one goal in the first half, but came on strong in the second half scoring three goals in a four minute span. Lobo keeper Kristen Winters (Lakewood, Colo.) was kept on her toes throughout the game making five saves, one of which was on a penalty kick in the 60th minute.

³We¹re a very young, inexperienced team playing our fourth weekend in a row on the road. We didn¹t play as well as we have been, but I like the progress we¹ve made,² said Head Coach Kit Vela. ³I know that our thirteen young players are learning invaluable lessons.²

In the 18th minute of play, OSU¹s Katie Henderson fired a shot from five yards out off a Brianna Monka pass to make the game 1-0. Despite having several quality scoring opportunities, the Lobos were unable to answer back until the 55:41 mark when Erchen Theys (Langdorp, Belgium) capitalized on a Beaver defensive mixup at the top of the 18-yard box and put away a shot over the head of OSU keeper Jo Fletcher.

The next two Beaver goals, both by Brianna Monka, occurred within a space of just over three minutes. At the 66:49 mark, Monka received a cross from Lindsey Beem at the far post and converted for the third Oregon State goal. In the 70th minute, Monka was able to pop the ball over Winters¹ head for her second goal of the day. Forty-five seconds later, OSU¹s Courtney Carter was able to get on the end of a Katie Henderson cross and head the ball into the back of the net.

With just less than 20 minutes left in the game, Lobo Michelle Longmire (Los Alamos, N.M.) closed the scoring gap after receiving a through ball from ErchenTheys that she put past a diving Fletcher. OSU made a final notch in the scorebooks at the 81:34 mark with a goal from Courtney Carter, her second of the game, leaving the final score at 5-2.

The Lobos drop to 6-5-0 while Oregon State improves to 7-2-2. UNM begins its conference slate next weekend against San Diego State on Oct 11 and UNLV on Oct 13. The pair of games concludes the five-week Lobo road-trip.
