BYU Defeats Washington State, 3-1 Cougars improve to 5-5.

PULLMAN, Wash. - The BYU women's soccer team came on strong in the second half to win the battle of the Cougars over Washington State of the PAC-10 3-1. The win improves the Cougars record to .500 at 5-5 while Washington State drops to 6-4. The Cougars are now 2-0 all-time against Washington State, winning their first meeting in Provo during the 2000 season. BYU struck first 22 minutes into the game as junior forward Terra Smith-Bigelow scored off an assist from Jennifer Henry-Fielding. WSU tied the game 15 minutes later off a goal but Rachel Rodrick, her fourth of the season. After being outshot in the first have 9-4, BYU poured on the heat in the second half outshooting WSU 10-9 while scoring two goals to seal the win. Freshman Brooke Bowman scored seven minutes into the second half off an assist by fellow freshman Charlene Lui. 2001 MWC Tournament MVP Lydia Ojuka notched her first goal of the season with 37 seconds left in the contest to avoid any last-second heroics by the home team. Freshman goalie Ashley Smith recorded seven saves in her defensive efforts for the Cougars. Even though the Cougars were outshot 18-14, they had more shots on goal "It was a great win for us today on a rainy, slippery field," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We got off to a real slow start again, but we came back in the second half and battled hard. Terra Bigelow hit a beautiful shot to keep us in the game in the first half."
The Cougars will travel to game two of their six-game road swing on
Saturday at Missoula, Montana as they face Montana University
Saturday at 1 p.m. The Cougars open conference play Oct. 10 at Air
Force. The next home game for the Cougars is Oct. 24 against UNLV at
7 p.m. at Southfield.
