Utah Beats Purdue 2-1 In First Night Game At Ute Field Adele Letro and Melissa Wayman score goals for No. 21 Utes

SALT LAKE CITY - The first night game at Ute Field will be a memorable one for the Utah women's soccer program. Even before the post-game fireworks show on Friday night, a crowd of 1,141 was highly entertained by a hotly contested game in which 21st-ranked Utah held off Purdue 2-1 to improve to 5-0. The teams played through windy conditions, particularly late in the first half when threatening rain clouds dropped a few sprinkles before skirting around Ute Field. Purdue possessed the ball on their end of the field for a long stretch midway through the first half but came away empty-handed. Utah then put the first point on the board in the 40th minute. Jen Christoffers found Adele Letro on the left side of the box. Letro maneuvered around the Boliermaker defenders to get the shot away in front of the net and placed it into the upper-right corner of the net past Purdue keeper Lauren Mason. Purdue (1-4) tied the game in the sixth minute out of halftime. Kim Comisar arced a shot over Ashley Mason from 10 yards out into the upper-left corner of the frame. The Utes broke the 1-1 tie in the 59th minute when Amanda Feigt connected with defender Melissa Wayman, who was playing up top. Wayman nailed a 20-yard diagonal shot from the left corner of the box that landed top shelf on the right side. Utah outshot Purdue 20-11, including a 9-3 advantage in the second half. Ashley Mason made six saves on the night for the Utes.
Both teams had five corner shots. Lauren Mason made seven saves for the Boilermakers, who lost their third in a row. Utah closes out its four-game home stand against Denver on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Ute Field. |
