Spiders score in 90th minute to force 0-0 double OT tie with Rebels.
Sept. 9, 2005 RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond's Carrie Holland collected a rebounded save and blasted it into the goal in the 90th minute to knot the score at 1-1, and UNLV was forced to settle for a 1-1 double-overtime tie in the first game of the VCU/Eurosport Women's Soccer Invitational on Friday afternoon. The tie snapped UNLV's three-game win streak, sending them to 3-1-1 on the year, while the Spiders moved to 2-2-1. The game looked to be in the Rebels' hands, as they scored the first goal of the game in the 18th minute. Sophomore midfielder Katie Carney notched her team-leading third goal of the year after collecting a loose ball and sending it into the net at 17:08. Both Angie Inzana and Tanya Roberts were credited with assists on the score. After being outshot 4-3 in the first half, UNLV was on the offensive in the second 45 minutes, holding an 9-5 edge in the second half. However, it was the Spiders' final shot of the half that doomed UNLV's chances for the win. Ashleigh Blumer sent a cross pass to Susan Boyer, who took a shot towards the UNLV goal from 12 yards out. UNLV goalkeeper Ceira Nero punched the shot out, but unfortunately for the Rebels it bounced out to Carrie Holland, who was all alone right outside the goalie box and her shot would tie the game with 42 seconds left in regulation, sending it into overtime. Both teams had their chances in the two overtimes, as UNLV outshot the Spiders 3-1 in the first OT period, while Richmond had a 4-0 advnatage in the second OT, but neither team would find the back of the net. Nero finished with five saves in goal for UNLV, while Richmond goalie Kelly Kolker was credited with four saves. UNLV, who is playing on the East Coast for the first time in program history, will meet the host VCU Rams in the second day of the tournament on Sunday at 11:30 am (PST).
