ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico women's soccer blanked Long Island Friday, 2-0, in the home opener at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos scored two second half goals and improved to 2-1 on the year. Senior Anna Neu scored the game-winning goal off a corner kick, while Hannah Hand found the net off a rebound. UNM completed its second straight shutout and advances in the Nike Classic. LIU falls to 1-2 overall with the loss.

"This is an awesome feeling to win at home," said UNM head coach Kit Vela. "We came out flat in the first half but responded to play well in the second period. We are starting to get into a rhythm and understand each other. Both of the goals were solid hits and ropes into the back of the net. We have made some major strides with this program and it was nice to win in front of a large crowd."

Neu's game-winner came in the 56th minute off a corner kick by Hand. The cross from Hand was barely missed by attacking freshman Alexis Ball and settled at the feet of Neu. Neu without hesitation drilled the ball pass the defense. It was the first goal of the year for Neu and the third of her career.

Hand added another goal on the board for UNM in the 79th minute off a rebound. Senior Amber Wetsch fired a shot off the keeper that gave Hand the open shot. Hand lined the shot into the goal from five yards out to help secure the victory.

Hand, which has started every game at forward, finished with an assist and her first goal of the year. The goal was her second all-time at UNM and marked the fifth Lobo to score this season.

UNM outshot the Blackbirds 13-4 and 9-2 in the second half. The Lobos did not allow a shot on goal and starting keeper Shannon Adragna played the full 90 minutes.

UNM takes on Utah Valley State Saturday at 3 p.m. inside the UNM Soccer Complex. The game will be available via gametracker and all-access through www.GoLobos.com.
