SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--- The University of New Mexico women's soccer squad defeated UC Santa Barbara 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. The Lobos are now 3-1-2 on the season, and have shutout four of their six opponents this season.
New Mexico secured the game-winning goal with a free kick in the 73rd minute of action. Senior Jennifer Williams crossed the ball into the box, where junior Shelbie Luna headed a long ball onto the foot of senior defender Roxie McFarland. McFarland then shot the ball past the Gaucho keeper, finding the back of the upper left corner of the net. The goal was McFarland's first of the season and second of her career.
The Lobos out-shot UCSB 9-6 and forced the opposing goalie to make three saves in 90 minutes of action. The Gauchos were unable to shake the Lobo defensive line, as Santa Barbara only had one shot on goal throughout the match.
Junior Kelli Cornell, the UNM all-time career shutout leader, once again prevented a Lobo opponent from finding the back of the net, raising her career shutout tally to 27. With the win, Cornell is now tied for first on the New Mexico all-time career wins list for a goalkeeper, with 28. The last Lobo to accomplish this feat was Kristin Winters who played from 2001-05.
UNM hits the road once again as the team travels to Portland, Ore. for the Pilot Classic hosted by the University of Portland. The Lobos will face Oregon State on Friday at 1 p.m. and Washington at Noon on Sunday.
