The University of Wyoming soccer team scored four second half goals en route to beating Northeastern University 4-2 in the opening match of the 2005 Denver Classic at Pioneer Field in Denver, Colo. The Cowgirls improve to 2-0 on the season and advance to the championship game of the tournament on Sunday.

In the first half, the Cowgirls struggled to get much going offensively and trailed 1-0 heading into the halftime break.

To start the second half, the Cowgirls took advantage of a Northeastern own goal in the 52nd minute to tie the game at 1-1. Senior Mercy Adetoye, who returned to the lineup after missing the season opener with a sore quad, put the Cowgirls up 2-1 when she beat the Northeastern defense on the dribble for her first goal of the season at the 56:14 mark. The Huskies then tied the game again, just over two minutes later, on Caitlin Whelan's second goal of the match. Freshman Tamika Wilson then put the Cowgirls up for good at the 67:15 mark when she scored on a header from a corner kick by fellow freshman Amanda Lathrop. Adetoye then added an insurance goal, her second of the game, in the 89th minute on an unassisted goal.

A pair of Cowgirls split time in the net in freshman Jamie Scarcliff and sophomore Ashley Sheppard, who also returned after being sidelined for the season opener with an injured shoulder. Each recorded one save en route to the victory. The Cowgirls outshot the Huskies 26-7 in the match and 20-2 in the second half.

"I am really proud of the way we fought back today," said UW head coach Anne Moore. "We played very well for our first road trip of the season. It was especially nice to get Mercy and Ashley back into the lineup. Our offense looked very tough in the second half as we played as a full unit for the first time this season."

The Cowgirls will face Colorado, the 25th ranked team in the nation, in Sunday's championship game. Colorado advanced to the championship after beating Denver in a shoot-out on Friday afternoon. The match is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. at Pioneer Field in Denver.

"Sunday will be a real test for us and I am very excited about the opportunity," added Moore. "Colorado is a tough team and are very worthy of their 25th ranking. We have played some very tough games with them in the past and we are excited about this one."
