Aug. 31, 2008
FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU battled Southeastern Conference opponent Ole Miss to a 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
Sophomore defender Nikki Wilbur looked to have put TCU on the board 18 minutes into the game, but watched as her header off a corner kick by Lizzy Karoly sailed high. The Rebels' Jennifer Hance netted the first goal of the match, beating Horned Frog goalkeeper Kelsey Walters from about 30 yards out. TCU's Kaylie Garcia tried to tie the game right before intermission, rocketing a shot towards the goal after splitting two defenders, but Mississippi goalkeeper Jackie DeNova blocked the shot to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead at the break. Following a goal by UM's Hannah Weatherly, freshman Katie Runyon netted her first career goal from inside the box. The Illinois native first hit the crossbar from the right hand side of the box and then followed the ricochet, booming the ball past DeNova. A minute later, freshman Jordan Calhoun tied the game at 2-2 off an assist from sophomore Chelsea Cody. Calhoun has now netted five goals on the season and scored goals in three-consecutive matches. In the 76th minute, junior Lizzy Karoly looked to break the tie on a penalty kick, but had her shot saved by DeNova. TCU would fire shots four more times following the penalty kick, but couldn't find the back of the net. Following regulation, Cody looked to have given TCU the victory in the 99th minute, but was denied by DeNova. In the second overtime period, both Garcia and Karoly tried to secure the victory with shots in the 104th and 110th minute, respectively, but couldn't connect from inside the box. TCU was led on offense by Cody who notched five shots and one assist, while on defense Walters saved five shots, including several key saves in the second half. Overall, TCU recorded 23 shots on the day, including nine on goal, while the Rebels posted 17 shots. With the tie, the Horned Frogs moved to 2-0-1 on the year, while Ole Miss went to 0-1-2 on the young season.
TCU will open the month of September on Sept. 5 at Arizona State. Start time for the match against the Sun Devils is set for 7 p.m. CT.
