Final Stats

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The New Mexico women's soccer team blanked the Baylor bears tonight by a final score of 2-0 at the UNM Soccer Complex. True freshmen midfielders Jael Fanning and Amanda Collins netted their first collegiate goals in the 18th and 78th minutes of the match, respectively. The Lobos improve to 1-1-1 on the season while Baylor falls to 0-2-0.

"It was an energetic game from both teams and it's pretty much what I expected," head coach Kit Vela said, "They (Baylor) are very athletic, very direct and very energized. We handled that really well and I thought that we played really well. Once we got a hold of the ball we did a good job keeping it as the game went on."

The Lobos kept offensive pressure on the Bears all night and got off to a quick start with the Fanning Goal. A corner kick by senior Hannah Hand grazed off sophomore Alexis Ball's head and was placed right in front of an awaiting Fanning who finished the play by ripping the ball in to the back of the net. With that assist Hand moves into a three-way tie for fourth place all-time at UNM with 12 career assists. Ball was also credited with an assist, her second of the season.

New Mexico put the game away late in the second half when a Baylor foul lead to a Krista Peterson free kick. Peterson sent a brilliant cross in to the box that Zaneta Wyne headed to Collins for the finish.

The Lobo defense held down the fort and only allowed the Bears to fire off eight shots. In the second half the Bears came out roaring and put more pressure on the Lobos. However the back line of seniors Samantha Bevis and Krista Peterson, junior Jess Quador and late replacement Megan Bodenheimer shut down the Baylor offense and only allowed one shot on goal. Senior Goal keeper Shannon Adragna picked up her first shutout of the season and her first win. Adragna is now in sole possession of third place all-time for career shutouts with 14 and moves into a three-way tie for third place all-time for career wins with 14.

The Lobos will host the UNM Classic on Sept. 5-9 at the UNM Soccer Complex. New Mexico welcomes Drake and Hawai'i to Albuquerque. The Lobos will play Drake on Friday, Sept. 5 at 5:30 p.m. MDT and Hawai'i on Sept 9 at 7:00 p.m. MDT. All Lobo home games will be broadcast live through All-Access on www.GoLobos.com.
