Air Force Unable To Maintain Lead In 4-2 Loss At Arkansas Yip and Bieber net goals for Falcons.
Aug. 28, 2009
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force women's soccer team dropped a wild 4-2 match at Arkansas in opening day action at the Razorback Adidas Classic Friday night Razorback Field. The loss dropped the Falcons to 0-2-1 on the season and improved the Razorbacks to 2-0. Air Force led twice in the match, but Arkansas exploded for three goals in a 13 minute span to erase a 2-1 Falcon lead and pull away to the win. The Falcons stuck for the first goal 19 minutes into the match as senior Kelsey Yip connected for her first-career goal off a free kick from 18 yards out. Air Force held off Arkansas for the rest of the first half and entered halftime leading 1-0. The lead was short-lived, as Arkansas roared out the gates in the second-half, tying the match up at the 48 minutes mark on a goal by Sophie Wentz. Just three minutes later, the Falcons went back ahead as Kelly Bieber beat the keeper after a pass from Stephanie Patterson to score the goal. The Razorbacks then tied the game up in the 56 minute mark as Lauren Hallauer scored from midfield off a kick that bounced over AFA goalkeeper Charity Blanton. Wentz then struck for her second goal 90 seconds later to give Arkansas a 3-2 lead. Kim Schleif added an insurance goal for the Razorbacks at the 70 minute mark to close out the scoring. Blanton had five saves in the loss for Air Force. Arkansas goalkeeper Britni Williams did not have a save in the win.
Air Force returns to action Sunday, Aug. 30, at the Razorback/Adidas Classic, taking on Austin Peay. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. CST. |
