Final Stats

LAS VEGAS, Nev.--The University of New Mexico women's soccer team beat the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners, 2-0 today at UNLV's Peter Johan Memorial Field in the early game of the UNLV Nike Classic. In the 100 degree heat sophomore Jordan Craig scored her first goal of the season in the 35th minute to put the Lobos in front for good. New Mexico improves to 2-0-0 on the season and Cal State Bakersfield falls to 2-1-0. The win marks the first time in Kit Vela's tenure and the first time since 2000 that New Mexico has started 2-0-0 on the season.

"I though it was a hard fought match," said head coach Kit Vela. "We showed a lot of heart and we found a lot of rhythm this match. I really proud of the our team effort. I think that was the most players I've every played without the level of play going down."

The Lobos dominated the entire match outshooting the Roadrunners 21-11. New Mexico used constant pressure and attacked early and often. The Lobo defense held the Roadrunner offense at bay and only allowed six shots on goal.

In the first half, junior Alexis Ball picked up a loose ball at the top of the box and found a streaking Craig who netted the gamewinner with her first goal of the season and the second of her career.

Ball's assist gave her sole possession of seventh place all-time at UNM for career points with 32.

Junior Rachel Fields showed a strong effort and determination by bouncing the ball off her stomach and into the goal to put the Lobos on top 2-0. A New Mexico shot by Ball bounced off CSUB keeper Kym Gause's chest and was up for grabs. After a pileup in front of the net the Fields dove over the pile and took the ball with her into the net for her first goal of the season.

Redshirt Freshman Kelli Cornell picked up her second straight win and shutout of the season.

The Lobos return to action Sunday, Aug. 30 and take on Illinois State at 11:30 a.m. MT. Sunday's game will be available on Gametracker throught www.GoLobos.com.
