SDSU Women's Soccer Blanks No. 21 Purdue, 4-0
Erika Sutton scores twice to lead Aztecs

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Sophomore Erika Sutton scored two goals and added an assist to lead the San Diego State women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over No. 21 Purdue in the championship game of the Purdue Boilermaker Challenge Cup Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind. Sutton was named the tournament's most valuable offensive player, while freshman Lauren Leslie was named the most valuable defensive player. Junior goalkeeper Cat Burson, junior Jessica Girdner and sophomore Mariko Strickland also garnered all-tournament honors. "This was a gratifying victory for us," head coach Mike Giuliano said. "It was the most complete game I've seen since I've been at San Diego State." Freshman Heather Vandevanter opened up the scoring for SDSU with her first career goal in the 17th minute, knocking in a rebound of Sutton's original shot. Sutton got on the scoreboard at the 29:55 mark when she one-touched a cross into the back of the net from sophomore Jen Mello. Vandevanter was also credited with an assist on the play. Mello scored the Aztecs' third goal of the first half in the 42nd minute with a blast from 20 yards out. SDSU would go into the halftime intermission with a 12-6 lead in shots and 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. The second half was much like the first half as the Aztecs outshot the Boilermakers (1-1), 10-8. Sutton tallied the final goal of the match at 84:44 with a shot to the near post from a few yards out.
For the game, SDSU had 22 shots to Purdue's 14 and owned a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Burson made six saves to post her second consecutive shutout. |
