LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The UNLV women's soccer team opened up the 2008 season with a hard fought 1-1 double-overtime tie at Loyola Marymount on Friday afternoon from Sullivan Field.

The Rebels struck first, when sophomore forward Ashleigh Shoughro chipped in a shot over LMU goalkeeper Allyssa Clark from 20 yards out for a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. Sophomore midfielder Amanda Forrester was credited with an assist on the score.

UNLV would hold a 5-3 edge on shots in the first half, and would go into halftime with the 1-0 advantage. The game would be tied shortly after the start of the second half as Lacey Bartels took a shot that was deflected by Rebel goalkeeper Alicia Lugo, but the rebound was headed in by Lauren Shanklin for the Lions' first score of the game.

Both teams posted five shots in the second half, but neither could come up with a second goal, sending the contest into overtime. After the first overtime in which both defenses held the other team without a shot, UNLV and LMU each had several good looks on the net in the second overtime. Lugo however came up with a stop while Clark recorded two saves, and the game would finish in a tie.

UNLV held a 13-10 edge on shots, while both teams had six shots each on goal, and both goalies were credited with five saves as well.

UNLV will remain in the state of California for its next game, as the Rebels will meet UC Irvine on Sunday afternoon at 5 pm in Irvine, Calif.
