Aug. 19, 2011
USAFA, Colo. - After giving up the first goal of the game in the 7th minute the Air Force women's soccer team scored four unanswered goals, including two from junior Eryn Avjian, to post a 4-1 victory over Colorado School of Mines in the 2011 season opener at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The game was officially considered an exhibition for Colorado Mines. Avjian, who entered the game in the 16th minute, tied the game at 1-all with a rocket shot from eight yards out past Mines goalie Penny Rogers in the 42nd minute after taking a centering pass from Bridgett Murphy. Avjian then put the Falcons up for good in the 55th minute after placing a pass from freshman McKenna Fox past Rogers. Senior captain Krystin Shanklin gave Air Force an insurance goal in the 78th minute with a free kick from 30 yards out that ricocheted off the crossbar then off backup goalie Amy Hegarty's shoulder into the net. Sophomore Ariel Saltin closed out the scoring with her first career goal in the 81st minute, firing a shot past Hegarty off a pass from Leah Bratt. Erin Onat scored the game's first goal for Mines, placing a 16-yard shot into the bottom right corner of the net past Air Force goalie Kelly Stambaugh. The Orediggers kept Air Force at bay in the first half, producing four shots on goal to just one for the Falcons. The second half was a different story, however, as Air Force dominated the entire 45 minutes, putting seven shots on net compared to just one for CSM. Stambaugh made four saves for the Falcons, while Rogers and Hegarty each had two for the Orediggers. Shanklin led all players with five total shots, while Onat had a team-high three for Colorado Mines. Air Force returns to action on Sunday, August 21 against CSU-Pueblo at Cadet Soccer Stadium, beginning at 11 a.m.
