Nyhus Is New BYU Women's Golf Coach Deseret News Feature Story
July 22, 2001
PROVO, Utah -- Sue Billek Nyhus has been named BYU's new head women's golf coach. "We are pleased to have a top female amateur golfer as the new women's golf coach at BYU," said K. Fred Skousen, vice president for advancement. "Sue is passionate about BYU golf and will attract outstanding junior golfers to the university. We are confident she will lead our women golfers to future success." Nyhus will replace longtime head coach Gary Howard, who will retire this year. For the past three years, Nyhus served as Howard's assistant, helping BYU qualify for the NCAA West Regional the past two seasons. Over the years, Nyhus has become one of BYU's most-accomplished female athletes. Sixteen years ago, she achieved academic All-American status on BYU's women's golf team and helped the Cougars to a 14th place NCAA finish her senior season in 1985. After graduation, she enjoyed a successful five-year career (1987-1991) in the Women's Professional Golf European Tour.
"I'm excited about taking on this new challenge," Nyhus said. "I've prepared myself in every way possible for the last 20 years of my life, and I can't believe I finally have the opportunity to coach at BYU."
