SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. -- University of New Mexico women's golfer Alexandra Phelps fired a 4-under 67 Tuesday in the opening round of the 63rd annual Albuquerque City Women's Golf Championship to lead all competitors. Phelps, the 2004 champion, took an early lead after scoring two birdies and an eagle on her first three holes. Phelps holds a one shot lead over Katie Kempter heading into the second round at the Santa Ana Golf Course.

After winning the title in 2004, Phelps tied for second last year with Kempter. Kempter, who plays for the University of Denver, shot a 68 Tuesday and is the only competition for Phelps. Maggie Ramirez won last year's event but is not competing in the championship.

The second round of the championship will have a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Wednesday. The final round is set for Thursday.
