UNM Has Two Selected to NGCA All-Scholar Team Downs and Spence maintained above a 3.6 GPA.

CHICAGO - The University of New Mexico had two players selected to the 2001-02 National Golf Coaches Association Division I All-Scholar Team. Freshmen Kailin Downs and Christina Spence both maintained above a 3.6 grade point average, thereby qualifying them for the prestigious honor. Criteria for the award is a minimum gpa of 3.5 and to have competed in at least 66% of a teams regularly scheduled competition. A total of 232 players received the honor this year. Downs, a native of Bend, Ore., established a new standard in freshman record books with her 74.9 season stroke average. Downs was recognized in the month of October (2001) by both the Mountain West (Player of the Month) and by GolfWeek magazine as their National Player of the Week, for her second place performance at the Fall Golf Classic in Hawai`i. Downs was also the first athlete in the history of the MWC to have captured both Freshman and Player of the Year Honors. She was also named to the MWC All-Conference team, one of four Lobos to be on the list. Downs finished ranked No. 81 in the nation.
Spence, from Port Alberni, British Columbia, played in seven of the Lobos
10 tournaments in her collegiate debut in the cherry and silver. Spence
finished with a 77.0 stroke average with her best finish coming at UNM¹s
Dick McGuire Invitational where she tied for 19th place. The Lobos took
the team title at the McGuire, one of three tournament titles of the season
for UNM. Spence shot a season low 73 in the final round of the Lady
Gamecock Classic in South Carolina.
