July 6, 2005

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State redshirt freshman golfer Megan McLeod (Fallbrook, Calif.) has qualified for her second major championship of the summer, earning a spot in the 2005 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, Aug. 1-7, at Ansley Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga. McLeod advanced by carding a 72 at the sectional qualifying tournament Tuesday at the PGA of Southern California Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif.

McLeod was one of eight golfers to qualify for the U.S. Women's Amateur at the PGA of Southern California Golf Club. She placed fifth overall, just two strokes behind Lizette Salas of Azusa, Calif., who led the field with a 70. There was a three-way tie for second place at 71, while three others advanced to the women's amateur with scores of 73, 73 and 74.

Qualifying tournaments for this summer's U.S. Women's Amateur began June 27, and continue throughout the country until July 6.

The U.S. Women's Amateur, the third oldest of the USGA championships, was first played in 1895 at Meadowbrook Club in Hempstead, N.Y. The event, which consists of two days of stroke play, followed by five days of match play, is open to any female amateur golfer whose USGA Handicap Index does not exceed 5.4.

McLeod has already qualified for the women's amateur public links championship, which is slated for July 11-16, in Kansas City, Mo., at the Swope Memorial Golf Course.
