UNLV To Represent MWC At 2006 NCAA Women's Golf Championship

BYU's Rachel Newren will compete as an individual in this year's championship.

May 22, 2006

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The UNLV golf team and BYU's Rachel Newren will represent the MWC at the 2006 NCAA Women's Golf Championship May 23-26. The championship finals will be held at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio, and will be hosted by Ohio State University. Fans can log onto to golfstat.com or themwc.com to find live scoring of this year's championship.

UNLV is making its second trek in the program's five-year history to the NCAA Championship. The Rebels finished sixth at the 2006 NCAA West Regional in Auburn, Wash., to earn a trip to the finals and were led by freshman Da Sol Chung, who placed fourth. UNLV placed 21st at the 2004 NCAA Championship in the squad's first-ever trip to the national tournament.

BYU junior Rachel Newren will be competing as an individual at the 2006 NCAA Women's Golf Championship. Newren placed second at the NCAA West Regional to earn an individual entry into this year's championship. Newren, who is making her second straight appearance at the NCAA Championships, tied for 68th at last year's championship and was the Cougars' top finisher at the NCAAs.

Three regional competitions were held May 11-13 to qualify for the NCAA Championship. Of the 324 regional participants, 126 advanced to the finals. Eight teams and two individuals, not on a selected team, advanced from each regional. All participants will compete throughout the entire 72 holes of competition. In the team competition, the low four scores for each team will count in each day's total score.
