Wyoming's Alison McGuire and Jana Johnson Tie for 18th, Cowgirls Finish
Fifth as a Team at the MWC Women's Golf Championship: Wyoming senior Jana
Johnson, from Buffalo, Wyo., saved the best round of her college career for
last, shooting a one-over par round of 72 on Wednesday at the 2001 Mountain
West Conference Women's Golf Championship. Johnson's 72 moved her up four
spots in the final round to a tie for 18th place with teammate Alison
McGuire at 230, seventeen over par for 54 holes.
As a team, Wyoming shot their best single round of golf in four
seasons, firing a 307 on Wednesday. The Cowgirls posted a 54-hole total of
936.
"Although we finished fifth, I'm proud of the way the girls competed
this week," said Wyoming women's golf coach Jill Johnson. "Our 307 today
was the best round we've shot all season. The seniors played extremely well
in the final round -- Jana (Johnson) shooting a 72 and Jessi (Santesson) a
76.
"We play in a very tough league with three of the five schools
virtually assured of spots in the NCAA Regionals and a fourth team, BYU,
feeling very good about their chances to get in the NCAAs.
"The girls realize how far they've come this season, and how much
they've improved. With three of our five competitors coming back next year,
I believe the experience they gained will be a big plus heading into next
season."
New Mexico won the team competition with a 54-hole total of 861.
Ryley Webb, a senior for New Mexico, won the individual championship, firing
a four-under par total of 209 for three rounds.
Jana Johnson's previous best round as a collegian was 74, which she
shot during both her junior and senior seasons. While UW's Johnson moved up
from 22nd to 18th place in the final day of competition, McGuire, a
sophomore from Cheyenne, Wyo., posted a score of 79 on Wednesday and fell
from a tie for ninth place down to 18th. In the first two rounds, McGuire
shot back-to-back career best rounds of 77 and 74, respectively.
