COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU, Colorado State and New Mexico will represent the Mountain West Conference in the 2002 NCAA Women's Golf West Regional May 9-11 at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif., announced by the NCAA earlier today. Three regional tournaments will be conducted May 9-11 to determine the championships field. Regional tournaments are considered preliminary rounds of NCAA championships competition.

A total of 324 athletes have been selected for regional competition. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each region, totaling 126 players for the championships finals May 21-24. The finals will be held at Washington National Golf Club, Auburn, Wash., hosted by the University of Washington.

The Lobos received the league's automatic bid after capturing their third straight MWC championship last week in Sunriver, Ore. New Mexico is currently ranked No. 24 in the latest Golf Week poll (released on Apr. 28) and placed 21st in the 2001 NCAA Championships. This will be the Lobos fifth consecutive NCAA Regional under head coach Jackie Booth.

BYU has advanced to a regional each of its three years in the MWC, but will be making its first appearance under first year head coach Sue Nyhus. The Cougars finished 18th in the West Region last year.

Second year head coach Megan Menzel has directed Colorado State to back-to-back NCAA Regionals. The Rams will be led by freshman Lynette Duran who captured MWC Championship individual medalist honors. Colorado State placed 15th at the West Regional in 2001.
