2003 MWC Women's Golf All-Conference Team Announced New Mexico's Downs named Player of the Year.
April 26, 2003 SUNRIVER, Ore. - The Mountain West Conference announced its all-conference team and individual awards at the conclusion of its women's golf championship today at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. New Mexico's Kailin Downs became the first golfer in the four-year history of the league to garner back-to-back player of the year honors. Sunny Oh of UNLV was named freshman of the year, while coach of the year honors went to Jackie Booth of New Mexico for the third straight year.
Downs led the MWC with a 73.68 scoring average in 25 rounds played and was the only golfer in the conference with a scoring average under 75. Downs claims the top honors in the league for the second straight year after also being named freshman of the year in 2002.
In just its second as an NCAA Division I golf program, UNLV claimed the freshman of the award with Sunny Oh. Oh had a scoring average of 75.04 over 24 rounds played and came within two strokes of the individual title at the 2003 MWC Championship.
New Mexico head coach Jackie Booth captured coach of the years honors for the third straight year after leading the Lobos to their fourth consecutive MWC Championship in 2003. Four of New Mexicos golfers are currently ranked in the top 10 in the MWC in scoring average and is currently ranked 12th in the nation according to Golfweek Magazine.
New Mexico placed a record four players on the all-conference team, followed by UNLV with two. The Lobos Katrina Leckovic and Downs are all two-time all-conference selections.
