April 21, 2003
Complete Release in PDF Format STORYLINE: The UNLV women's golf team competes in the Mountain West Conference Championship this week at the Meadows Course (5,851 Yards, Par 71) at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. This is the Rebels second year in the league, but UNLV comes into the event with the second-highest ranking among conference schools and poses a threat to unseed three-time defending champ New Mexico. The Rebels earned the first team win in the program's brief history in their last outing, defeating a field that included five of the MWC's six women's golf teams at the BYU Dixie Classic in St. George, Utah. ABOUT UNLV: The Rebels enter this week ranked 34th in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. In its last competition, UNLV won the BYU Dixie Classic by three strokes over San Francisco, marking the first team win in school history. Freshman Elena Kurokawa has been the hottest Rebel lately, finishing in the top 20 at four of her last five events. THE FIELD: The Mountain West Conference hosts six teams at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore.: (51) Brigham Young, (69) Colorado State, (12) New Mexico, (81) San Diego State, (34) UNLV and (145) Wyoming. THE LINEUP: The Rebels' lineup for the Mountain West Conference Championship will consist of Christine Hentzner, Hwanhee Lee, Elena Kurokawa, Sunny Oh and Erin Borcherts. HEAD COACH MISSY RINGLER: UNLV women's golf head coach Missy Ringler is in her first year at UNLV. She took over for Kelley Hester, who left to become the head coach at Arkansas. An All-Big Eight golfer at Iowa State from 1990-95, Ringler spent the last three years as the head coach at the University of Minnesota. She and her husband, Lance, welcomed their new son, Landon, on January 11, 2003.
ON DECK:
Should the Rebels win the conference title, they would also gain the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals. If not, UNLV will await a potential at-large bid, to be announced by the NCAA on Monday, April 28. The NCAA Regional Championships will be played at three different sites around the country from May 8-10.
