Course: The Meadows course at the Sunriver Resort will host the conference championships. The course plays to a par 71 on 6,098 yards.

MWC Championships Field: There will be 6 teams participating in the MWC Championships (GolfWeek Rank - April 16): Brigham Young (58), Colorado State (60), New Mexico (22), San Diego State (65), UNLV (74), and Wyoming (148).

Lobo Lineup: Traveling to Oregon includes: Claudia Ferrini, Kristi Larsen, Kailin Downs, Katrina Leckovic and Shannon Johnson.

2001 MWC Championships Recap: The University of New Mexico women¹s golf team captured its second straight conference title by a 26-shot margin at the 2001 MWC Golf Championships also held in Sunriver, Ore.

New Mexico shot a third round 283, setting a new MWC Championships tournament single round low. For the tournament, the Lobos three-round score of 861 (+9) was also a MWC record. This was the 11th conference title for the New Mexico women¹s golf program since it began conference competition in 1978.

Individually for the Lobos, senior Ryley Webb took individual medalist honors by one-shot (209-210) over teammate Elisa Kase. Webb shot a third round 69 (-2) to capture her first tournament title as a Lobo. Kase shot even par (71) to place second.

Then junior Claudia Ferrini finished in fourth place carding a third-round 70 (-1) finishing with a tournament score of 217. Kristi Larsen finished 13th with a tournament score of 227 followed by teammate Kellyn Newman who placed tied for 14th with a tournament score of 228.

Head coach Jackie Booth was named 2001 MWC Coach of the Year, Kristi Larsen was named 2001 MWC Freshman of the Year and three Lobos were named to the All-Conference Team including Larsen, Webb and Kase.

New Mexico was the only school to have more than one athlete on the all-conference team.

Player Notes:

  • Freshman Kailin Downs leads the Mountain West Conference leaderboard in stroke average with a 74.9. In second is teammate Kristi Larsen who comes in at 75.4.

  • Four Lobos are listed in the top-five MWC leaderboard with senior Claudia Ferrini coming in at No. 4 with a 75.7 average and sophomore Katrina Leckovic listed at No. 5 with a 76.1. Freshman Christina Spence is tied for ninth with a 77.0 average.

  • Ferrini¹s stoke average of 75.7 is a career season low and is sixth-tenths off the UNM Senior Record of 75.1 (held by former UNM great Caroline Keggi). Ferrini¹s career average stands at 77.3 (108 rounds...8,344 strokes). She ranks fifth in the nation in Sand Saves with a 63% average (5th out of 284 listed players).

    Team Notes:

  • The lineup for the ASU Invite consisted of three freshmen and two sophomores - the youngest lineup UNM has placed into action this season. While young, the Lobos have made this season one of UNM¹s most successful. So far in eight tournaments New Mexico has won two titles and finished in the top-five in two, top-10 in three and 14th in the other.

  • Downs is the No. 3 freshman in the nation in score average as ranked by GolfStat. Downs GolfStat scoring average is 75.10 which ranks behind UC Irvine¹s Walailak Satarak at 73.92 and UCF¹s Federica Piovano at 74.68.

  • Should the players stroke average remain as is...two UNM school records will be broken. Downs stroke average of 74.9 would break the Freshman Record of 75.8 (set by Ryley Webb in 1997-98), and Kristi Larsen¹s 75.4 would break the 20 year old Sophomore record of 76.2 set by Sue Sanders in 1981-82.

  • Of the 12 listed MWC Championship records the Lobos own 11 of the marks.
