COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU sophomore Rachel Newren was named Mountain West Conference Golfer of the Month for April after capturing her first career tournament title at the BYU Dixie Classic played at Entrada at Snow Canyon in St. George, Utah, April 4-5. Her individual title also helped the Cougars finish third overall as a team.

After shooting a 78 in windy conditions on the first 18 holes, Newren carded the second-best round of the tournament with a 71 during second round action. Her 36 hole total of five-over 149 on the par 72, 6,151 yard course was one stroke better than runner up Seema Sadekar of UNLV.

Newren's individual title marked the first medalist honors for a Cougar since Carrie Summerhays in 2001. Her second round 71 was also the second-best mark of her career. In nine tournaments played this season, Newren has recorded five top 10 finishes.
