The San Diego State women's golf team is back in action this week for the first time since Feb. 13 with a double dose of competition at the Utah Dixie Classic, April 9-10 and the Peg Barnard California Collegiate, April 14-15.
Utah-Dixie Classic
The Aztecs will kick of the week at the Utah Dixie Classic on Monday and Tuesday, April 9-10, hosted by Brigham Young. The tournament is being held at the par-72, 5,939 yard Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George, Utah. SDSU finished 11th of 25 teams, shooting a 54-hole score of 933 (305-317-311) at last season's Dixie Classic. Senior Jo Clingan turned in SDSU's top individual score with a 227 (73-73-80), good for 15th.
The Field
The 18-team field includes three teams ranked in the top 50 (according to the Golfweek poll), No. 46 Nevada, No. 48 Colorado State, and No. 47 San Diego State. The remaining teams include Brigham Young, Long Beach State, Colorado, Denver, Hawaii, Idaho, Idaho State, Mesa State, Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona, San Francisco, Texas Pan-Am, Weber State and Wyoming.
Peg Barnard California Collegiate
The Aztecs will finish the week at the Peg Barnard California Collegiate, April 14 and 15, hosted by Stanford. The 36-hole event will be played at the 72-par, 6,154-yard Stanford Golf Course. Play will begin with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun on both Saturday and Sunday. SDSU finished seventh of 11 teams at last year's event, shooting a 630 (302-322). Clingan turned in the top Aztec finish, tying for ninth with a 151 (75-76).
The Field
The 11-team field includes five teams ranked among the nation's top 50, No. 4 Stanford, No. 23 Washington, No. 25 California, No. 46 Nevada and No. 47 San Diego State. The remaining teams include Washington State, Northern Arizona, Long Beach State, Oregon, San Francisco, CSU Monterey Bay.
SDSU Competitors
San Diego State's five-member team for the week includes senior Jo Clingan, junior Heather Rollo, junior Asa Jankler, freshman Sandy Kim, and sophomore Jennifer Hoene. Freshman Shayna Miyajima is competing as an Individual.
Catching Up
The Aztecs last competed at the Pioneer Electronic Bruin Classic at Menefee Lakes Country Club, March 12-13. SDSU completed the 54-hole tourney with a score of 919 to finish eighth of 18 teams. Pepperdine took the team title with a nine-over-par team score of 873. Among Mountain West Conference teams, the Aztecs finished behind New Mexico (906, 6th) and ahead of Brigham Young (941, 17th). San Diego State's top individual finisher was junior Heather Rollo, who fired a six-over-par 221 to tie for 12th place. Prior to the Bruin Classic, the Aztecs turned in a third-place finish at the Bay Area Classic (309-317-626), Feb. 27 and a sixth-place finish at the Lady Aztec Spring Invitational (323). The Lady Aztec Invite was held to one round due to rain.
Rollo Leading The Aztecs
Junior Heather Rollo has turned in the top finish in all three tournaments for the Aztecs this spring. She opened the season with a fifth-place finish at the Lady Aztec Spring Invitational with a 77. Rollo had her best finish at the Bay Area Classic, placing second with a 149 (74-75). This performance earned her Mountain West Player of the Week honors for the week of March 1st. Most recently, Rollo tied for 12th with a 222 (76-71-75) at the Pioneer Bruin Classic. Rollo is 11th on the MWC leaders list with a 78.3 stroke average.
