MWC Women's Golfer of the Month BYU's Rachel Newren earn March honor.
March 28, 2007 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU senior Rachel Newren has been selected the Mountain West Conference Women's Golfer of the Month for March. Newren, a Salt Lake City, Utah, native, had two solid finishes in the two tournaments the Cougars played in March. She finished third at the UNLV Spring Invitational where the Cougars won with an impressive 17-under-par team score. Newren had rounds of 67-70-72, to finish at seven-under-par on the 6,199-yard Boulder Creek Golf Club course. The field in Las Vegas included 15th-ranked New Mexico and 30th-ranked UNLV. Individually, Newren finished as the top MWC player for the tournament. One week later, battling against the wind, Newren again led the Cougars with a ninth-place finish at the Donnis Thompson Invitational in Hawai`i. She recorded scores of 76-79-72, to finish at 11-over par on the 5,829-yard Kaneohe Klipper Golf Club course, helping her team to a third-place finish. Newren currently leads the MWC in stroke average (70.67) and has recorded six top-10 finishes this season. She has received the MWC Golfer of the Month honor twice for the season.
