LAS VEGAS - The BYU women's golf team took advantage of a beautiful sunny day in Las Vegas to shoot an eight-under-par 288 in the UNLV Spring Invitational on Monday.

With three scores under-par, the Cougars shot their best opening round of the season as they sit at the top, four strokes ahead of conference rival New Mexico.

All American, Rachel Newren tied the low 18-hole team record and leads the team and the tournament with a five-under-par 67. Newren did not look back after she holed it out on the 7th hole with a nine iron from 135 yards away, and then on the 10th hole with the same club from 120 yards away.

"After the 10th hole, I was just thinking about breaking the school record," said Newren, "even though I tied it, it gives me something to shoot for tomorrow, and set the bar for the team and the rest of the field."

A couple of shots behind and with seven birdies in her pocket, sophomore Natalia Jimenez sits in 4th place with a personal best three-under-par 69.

Senior Danielle von Arnim also had a personal best for the day as she shot one-under-par 71 and is tied for 10th. Freshman Daphne Vines is tied for 26th with a one-over-par 73 and junior Juli Erekson shot a four-over-par 76 to finish tied for 50th.

"I'm especially proud of my seniors today," said head coach Sue Nyhus, "They played with poise and maturity and led our team to a near scoring record."

Play will continue tomorrow morning with Cougar tee times starting at 9 am. Follow the action live on www.golfstat.com.
