Oct. 28, 2009
By Leah Sakdol BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The Colorado State women’s golf team completed the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown on Wednesday tied for 11th. The UNLV tournament marked the end of the fall season for the Rams. CSU posted a third-round score of 314 giving them a three-round score of 912 (+48). With winds of up to 35 miles-per-hour, the tournament proved to be very difficult for all teams. “The weather was bad,” Head Coach Angie Hopkins commented. “We dealt with three to four club winds the entire day.” Arizona held on to first place, ending with a score of 878 (+14). Florida captured second (883) and Louisville placed third (886). Sherlyn Popelka of Arizona finished in first with a score of 209 (-7). CSU sophomore Melissa Martin led the Rams during the final round with a score of 76 (+4). Martin had a three-round score of 223 (+7) allowing her to finish tied for 14th. Senior Natalie Stone finished tied for 28th after scoring a 78 (+6) on Wednesday. Her final score was 226 (+10). “Melissa really hung in there for us,” said Hopkins. “For her to have a good tournament will boost her confidence quite a bit. Natalie also finished strong. She shot a 78 after being 4-over on one hole.” Senior Kasey Claussen finished 18-over with a score of 234. Claussen came in tied for 63rd. Sophomore Brianna Espinoza finished tied for 75th with a score of 236 (+20).
Freshman Emily Roering had a third round score of 79 (+7). Roering was disqualified from the individual competition after the first round for accidentally using the wrong score card. Her score still counted towards the team score during the second and third rounds. “We do have a little work to do in the off season,” added Hopkins. “We will be ready to go by spring.” The Rams will begin the spring season in March at the Spartan Invitational in California.
