LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The sixth-ranked University of New Mexico women's golf team sits on top the leaderboard after the first round of the 2002 Price's Give'em Five Intercollegiate being held today through Wednesday in Las Cruces, N.M. New Mexico carded a 299 (+11) and are five shots ahead of second place Baylor (304). Rounding out the top-five inlcude host New Mexico State who is tied with Arkansas-Little Rock at 305 and San Jose State with a 308. New Mexico State is hosting the three-day event at the University Golf course which plays to a par 72 on 6,303 yards. Leading the tournament individually is UNM junior Kellyn Newman, Mesa, Ariz., who shot a career low round of 72 (E). She has a one-shot lead over Baylor's Melanie Hagewood and San Jose State's Tai Kinney who shot first round scores of 73. New Mexico's Shannon Johnson is tied for fourth place with a 74 followed by teammate Katrina Leckovic who is tied for 11th with a 75. Sophomore Kailin Downs is tied for 29th with a 78 while Christina Spence, also a sophomore, is tied for 36th with a 79.
