Newren Moves Up The Leaderboard Junior tied for 37th after three rounds.
May 25, 2006
COLUMBUS, Ohio - BYU's Rachel Newren climbed the leaderboard with an impressive one-over-par 73 on Thursday at the 2006 NCAA Women's Golf Championship. Newren, after starting tied for 62nd place, turned in her best round of the tournament and is now tied for 37th place. Ranked No. 32 in the nation, Newren began the day on the back nine and made birdies on holes 11 and 12. Her approach on Hole No. 12 landed close to the pin, but a challenging green cause her ball to run away from the cup downhill about 20-25 feet. Despite the setback she nailed the tough putt giving her a well-earned birdied, her third of the tournament. "The difference between today and yesterday was that she made a few more putts," BYU head coach Sue Nyhus said. "Once again she is hitting the ball extremely well. I have no doubt she's going to have a great final round tomorrow." Newren, a junior from Salt Lake City, has improved with each round in her second appearance at college golf's biggest tournament and is just one round away from setting the BYU record at a national championship event. If Newren can shoot an 81 or less she will break the 72-hole total of 304 set in 1980 by Pam Miller and tied by Newren last season. She is also on pace to have the single best season in BYU women's golf history. Currently her stroke average is 74.60 which should be enough for her to break the current single-season stroke average record of 74.85. "She's a great player," Nyhus said. "She's very patient and plays one shot at a time, which is the type of golf that makes champions." The final round of the tournament begins tomorrow with live scoring on www.golfstat.com. Pepperdine's Eileen Vargas leads the tournament as the lone player under par for the tournament at two-under.
