Newren Goes Six-Over-Par In Round One Junior is tied for 86th after round one at NCAA Championships.
May 23, 2006
COLUMBUS, Ohio - BYU's Rachel Newren began the 2006 NCAA Women's Golf Championship with a six-over-par 78 and is tied for 86th place on Tuesday. The All-American from Salt Lake City was one of six individual qualifiers competing with 24 teams. Newren's second consecutive national championship started off well before she leaked a little oil down the stretch. "It's a very challenging course," BYU head coach Sue Nyhus said. "She was able to get up and down pretty well all day until the last four holes where she had a tough time getting the ball to go in the cup." The scores don't lie about the difficulty of the newly-remodeled Scarlet Course on the campus of Ohio State University. Only six out of the nation's top 126 golfers scored under par in the first round. Pepperdine's Eileen Vargas leads the tournament at four-under-par while USC is the team leader at three-over-par. The highlight of the day for Newren was her birdie on the par four hole number two. Her second shot landed just off the front of the green and she was able to roll in her putt for a birdie. She finished the front nine at just one-over-par, but struggled down the stretch, ending with four consecutive birdies. "She's confident and ready to come out and put three good rounds together," Nyhus said. Live scoring of the national championship is available online at www.golfstat.com.
